Externally, generally smart with rubbing to the head and tail of spine. Lighter rubbing to the extremities. Spine has faded in colour slightly. Front endpaper has been removed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Heavy spotting to the first and last few pages, heavier to the first few. The odd spots throughout. Very Good. book.

George Manville Fenn (January 3, 1831, Pimlico - August 26, 1909, Isleworth) was a British writer. He worked as a teacher in Lincolnshire, until he became printer, editor and publisher of various magazines. He had eight children with his wife Susanna Leake, whom he had married in 1855. Most of his work consists of adventure stories for young readers, featuring Explorers, Smugglers, young Adventurers and Seamen. His adult novels offer critical social commentary on Victorian England, especially reconsidering economic questions. In a full cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine and front panel, and pictorial design. Externally, sound. There is some wear to the extremities, particularly to the spine which is sunned, and chipped and bumped to the top and tail. Presentation bookplate dated 1898 to the front endpaper. The front and rear hinges are strained but holding. Internally generally firmly bound, however its has split in three places in the centre and holding by the cords. Pages are generally clean with some isolated spots. The frontispiece has been torn and taped at the back, with some loss that does not affect the plate. Good Only. book.

A slip containing the armour and information on the family 'Mundy of Caldrees Manor' has been tipped into the front pastedown. Illustrated with several plates throughout. With the success of J. M. Barrie and the Kailyard school of sentimental, homey writing had created a demand for stories in Lowland Scots, with Crockett publishing his successful story of The Stickit Minister during 1893. It was followed by a rapidly produced series of popular novels frequently featuring the history of Scotland or his native Galloway. Crockett made considerable sums of money from his writing and was a friend and correspondent of R. L. Stevenson. In original cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spine.
