Front hinge mostly exposed, binding still fairly firm. Foxing on end papers and apparently 2, front and rear, have been ripped out. Text complete. No markings. Brown and gray art deco covers, matching abstract Art Deco color illustrations setting off each chapter. Rear material includes a 25-pp script of a radio show titled "Salute to the Modern Newspaper," paying tribute to the German immigrant who invented the linotype machine. His saga is presented in human terms, with the technological details presented in language a layman can understand. This book celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Merganthaler Linotype Co., which long ago merged into a German conglomerate. Linotypes, which produced lines of "hot" type from molten lead alloys, became mostly obsolete by the 1960s, replaced by "cold type" photo offset printing. Some old linotypes can still be found in Third World printing plants as well as in American museums and historical displays in newspaper buildings. A catalog of various type fonts sold by Mergenthaler for its photo typesetting equipment. The catalog is undated, but probably about 1960. An embossed gilt seal showing Ottmar Mergenthaler is pasted on the upper right section of the front cover; a portion of the seal is discolored. Laid in a pocket on the inside cover is a large folding chart, 44 in. tall by 31 in wide, displaying scores of lines of type of various font families -- Times Roman, Franklin Gothic, Garamond, Copperplate, Century, Goudy and many more. The chart is titled "The Mergenthaler 18-unit Library as set on V-I-P" A blank font order form is laid in a rear pocket. A scarce artifact for collections in the fields of publishing, graphic arts and newspapers. Size: 9 in Tall By 12 in Wide.
