Soft cover. Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Undated. Ten Cent Pocket Series No.30. Edited by E. Haldeman-Julius. 54-page booklet plus publisher's advertising. The author describes his working class background from that of a newsboy at age ten and a wide variety of other jobs until finally at age 18 realizing he could make his way in the world faster using his brains rather than muscle. Thus began his pursuit of knowledge. Through his pursuit he came upon writers of sociological concepts, many concepts he had already figured out for himself. He then describes himself as a Socialist, and a revolutionist.

No Binding. Condition: Collectible-Fine. Original black and white photo postcard. No date, circa 1930s. 5 1/2" x 3 1/2." Title printed at the bottom of the image. Postcard is unused. Postcard is virtually pristine and intact. A Fine copy. This postcard shows the chapel of "Ramona's Marriage Place" in San Diego, California. Ramona's marriage place is actually Casa de Estudillo, a historic adobe residence. Jose Maria Estudillo and his son Jose Antonio Estudillo were early settlers of San Diego and built Casa de Estudillo in 1827. The Estudillo house became associated with Helen Hunt Jackson's historical novel, Ramona, when the San Diego Union published a front-page article in 1887 stating that Casa de Estudillo was supposedly the place where the character of Ramona got married. The appearance of Casa de Estudillo apparently fit the description of Ramona's marriage place in the book as well, so the association stayed. The imprint of "Frasher's Fotos, Pomona, Calif." is printed in the lower-right corner of the image. "Pub. by Frasher's, Inc., Pomona, Calif" is printed on the back. Burton Frasher (1888-1954) was an American photographer and publisher of postcards. Frasher toured around much of the American West and even into Mexico to take photographs and sell them as postcards. Frasher's postcards proved to be very popular during the 1930s and 1940s and were widely circulated.

Eastman & Company specialized in commercial photography and postcards. In 1898, Eastman had begun his career as a professional photographer in Sisson (now Mt. Shasta), California. He later joined the Shasta View Company in 1907 before he founded his studio. In 1936, Eastman hired fellow photographer Mirl Simmons. Eastman and Simmons became business partners in 1947. This postcard shows the Market Cross, a medieval Christian cross, in the center of a marketplace in Grantham, England. The monument is composed of a medieval limestone base shaped in tiered octagonal slabs atop which is an iron cross. It dates back to at least 1300. Parts of the cross have undergone restorations over the years including the base. The shaft is from the late twentieth century. The knop and head are thought to be from the eighteenth or nineteenth centuries. Standing crosses such as this one were commonly used to mark the locations where major announcements were made. These crosses might also mark locations geographically or where sermons were made. Valentine & Sons was founded in 1825 as a lithographic company by John Valentine in Dundee, Scotland. John's son, James Valentine (1815-1879), joined as a business partner just five years later. James eventually took over the business and restructured the company in 1851. Valentine & Sons became a leading manufacturer of postcards in both Scotland and abroad when it ventured into the industry during the 1890s. After James's passing, the company was run by his two sons, William Dobson Valentine (1844-1907) and George Valentine (1852-1890). The company continued to operate until 1963 when it was sold to John Waddington, Limited. John Waddington then sold the business to Hallmark Cards in 1980. Valentine & Sons formally ceased operations in 1994 when their factory in Dundee closed.

This postcard shows Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de Mexico ("Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral") in Mexico City's Zocalo (central plaza). The cathedral was constructed between 1573 and 1813 and features Baroque, Gothic, Neoclassical, and Neo-Renaissance architecture. It was built directly over Templo Mayor, the main temple of the Mexica (Aztecs) in Tenochtitlan. The Zocalo's former gardens are also depicted on the postcard. The gardens were planted circa 1914 and replaced ash trees that were planted in the nineteenth century with palm trees. Unfortunately, the plaza had severely deteriorated by the 1970s and the gardens are no longer there. Beginning in the late 1990s, plans were implemented to repair and renovate the Zocalo. "D.F." on the postcard refers to "Distrito Federal," Mexico City's former designation as a Federal District. In 2016, its name officially changed to Ciudad de Mexico (CDMX). Agfa was the abbreviated name of Aktien-Gesellschaft fur Anilin-Fabrikation, a German photochemical company that was founded in 1867 in Berlin. Agfa merged with the American company, Ansco, to become Agfa-Ansco in 1928. Both companies produced photographic postcard stock to be used for photo post cards. Ansco manufactured photography paper and equipment until the 1980s.

Trade card is very clean and intact except for slight discoloration at the edges and a few small wrinkles. A Near Fine copy. Trade card for an unidentified company. The trademark on back belongs to Charles Goodall & Son, a manufacturer of playing cards that was based in London. Charles Goodall (1785-1851) founded his company in 1820. His two sons later joined the business. Charles Goodall & Son enjoyed much success and produced about 2/3 of all English playing cards by the mid-1800s. Over the years, the firm also introduced new products such as stationery and games. The company is also notable for popularizing the court card faces on playing cards as they are known today. Charles Goodall & Son had many more decades of success, but the economic hardships brought about by World War I and the lack of successors resulted in the company being sold to its competitor, De La Rue, in 1922. The Goodall brand name continued to be used years after the acquisition. Trade cards are antique business cards that first became popular during the late seventeenth century in Paris and Lyon, France and London, England. Trade cards were often given by business owners and proprietors to patrons and customers as a way to promote their businesses. Prior to the use of street addresses, trade cards had maps so clients could locate the associated business. Many of these cards also incorporated elaborate designs, illustrations, and other decorative features. Trade cards became popular in the United States during the nineteenth century in the period after the Civil War. The late nineteenth century also saw the advent of trade card collecting as a hobby. While they are no longer in use, trade cards influenced the formation of trading cards and were the predecessors of modern-day business cards.
