Self-styled eighth edition. The author set out for Jerusalem from Aleppo in February 1699. He describes crossing Turkey, with a visit to Tripoli and much on Jerusalem. The plates show a view of Aleppo, temple floorplans and views, and other scenes along the way.

Scattered foxing throughout; light dampstaining to plates, primarily affecting margins; moderate age- toning. About very good. Issued by the American Sunday School Union, this handsome production contains some very early American lithographs by Augustus Köllner after the original sketches by Ludwig Mayer. The text, adapted from the work of E.F.C. Rosenmueller, provides historical explanations of the various scenes with accompanying biblical references. Köllner, born in Dusseldorf in 1813, was an artist and prolific lithographer, who studied lithography in Frankfurt before emigrating to the United States and settling in Philadelphia. There are eight lightly toned scenic views of "Bethesda," "The Valley of Jehoshaphat," "The Brook Kedron," "The Mount of Olives," "Mount Tabor," "Nazareth," "Sea of Tiberias," and "Bethany." The superb picturesque views also feature details of everyday life in the region, the figures giving a sense of scale to the landscape, travellers on horse-back pass along the bank of the Brook Kedron, and two foreign soldiers on leave relax on the shores of the Sea of Tiberias. This book is notable both as an example of early American lithography, and as an early American work about the Holy Land.

Gaspar Ens, the prominent German historian, revised the 1606 European itinerary of Cyprianus Eichovius to include distances and routes from Venice to the major cities of the Eastern Mediterranean. There are descriptions of Constantinople, Jerusalem, Cairo, and Tunis, as well as detailed instructions about travel by land and sea. This copy carries the ink stamp of Richard Heber (1773-1833), the "fiercest and strongest of all bibliomaniacs." Moderate wear to spine and corners. Small ink stamps on edges of text blocks, a few in text, not affecting images. Several leaves loose. Very good. Scarce work on Franciscan missions in the Holy Land, with 263 photogravures of places facing explanatory text. The first volume contains images of Judea and Galilee, while the second comprises illustrations of Syria, Cyprus, and Egypt. Illustrations include exterior scenes showing missions in their surroundings, town views, scenes of holy places, including the Stations of the Cross in Jerusalem, interiors of the churches, scenes in the missions including printing shops and a variety of manufacturing shops, and group shots of friars with their students. A superb collection of images.

A rare edition of this early travel narrative, giving an account of the journey of Johannes de Hesse, encompassing the Holy Land and other regions, in 1389. In a similar vein with Mandeville's travels, Hesse's work provides the reader with a fantastic and extremely engaging narrative - he encounters cannibals, pygmies, and a unicorn; sees a parting of the sea, which enables him to reach a holy shrine; finds and visits the Garden of Eden; and spends a significant amount of time visiting the legendary (and mythical) Prester John in his oriental palace. Like Mandeville's travels, Hesse's ITINERARIUS is significant for its place in the development of travel literature. It was popular enough to have been printed in seven editions from about 1490 to 1500, in Cologne, Antwerp, and Deventer. Includes a full-page woodcut printer's device on the verso of the final leaf.
