A scarce work from the premier American frontier historian, whose SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FRONTIER IN AMERICAN HISTORY defined historical study of the American West.

Pocket map, 17 1/2 x 14 1/2 inches, handcolored; folded to 5 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. Original cloth folder, stamped in blind and gilt. Minor toning and soiling to map. Contemporary bookseller's label on front pastedown. Fine. A handsome and pristine copy of this scarce map of Wisconsin. The entirety of the state is handcolored, with each county delineated in a distinguishing color from its neighbors. Much of the northern portion of the state is empty at this point in time. The Chicago area and neighboring portion of southern Minnesota are also included. The front pastedown has a bookseller's label advertising "T.B. Peterson's Publishing and Bookselling Establishment, 102 Chesnut Street, Philadelphia." This label has been pasted over the printed endpaper advertising Desilver, and is likely where the map was originally sold. In beautiful condition, almost like new.

Overall, a very good copy of a rare work. This is the record of the first session of the Territory of Minnesota legislature, and among the earliest of Minnesota imprints. Printing began in Minnesota in the summer of 1849, and this volume, covering the acts of the first legislature, was issued early in 1850. The printers Goodhue and M'Lean were not in partnership, but each printed a part of the work, hence the idiosyncrasies of layout and pagination. The preliminaries are composed of the Constitution and AN ORDINANCE FOR THE GOVERNMENT OF THE TERRITORY OF THE UNITED STATES NORTHWEST OF THE RIVER OHIO. A rare title, with only ten copies in OCLC.
