The author was an aristocratic French artist, traveler, and journalist who lived with the Inuit (Eskimo) and shared their life in the Canadian Arctic.

Story of the author's stay in a log cabin in the Schwatka Mountians of northwest Alaska, alone for 266 days, "testing himself against the solitude and watching an Arctic winter come and go.".

Mamals, birds and fish. Muskox, caribou, bears, whales, seals, geese, ducks, owls, gulls, all sorts of fish, etc. Each animal has a picture and brief description, along with names in English, Latin, and Inuktitut. The book is based on Joanne Coutu's "Animals of the Eastern Arctic: A Checklist in English and Inuktitut.".
