Five House of Commons Command Papers, two sketch maps (in the reports for Hankow and Pakhoi) based on ordnance surveys, numerous tables, in all 118 pp (+ blanks), original plain stab-sewn title wrappers, 24.5 x 15.5 cm, edge wear and discolouration, the wrapper to one Report (Tachienlu) with tidemark to the upper edge and that for Shanghai a little creased and chipped at the foot, several unopened leaves in the Report for China, neat inked stamp of the University of Hull Library to the front wrappers, but an interesting group in very good condition. Including analysis of trade, and commentary on customs and society by the serving British Consuls or their agents. De-accessioned from the University of Hull Library, sold with their permission.

Parliamentary Report (House of Commons Command Paper), 34 x 21.5 cm, 16pp., folding map, original plain title wrappers, stamp of the Bibiothèque du Palais de la Paix with their shelf stamp on the title page, in very good condition. Report for Saigon for 1912 by the British Consul Thomas Carlisle. He notes the disproportionate advantage given to French imports because of the tariff advantage as against broader European (British) market share.

Parliamentary Report, tables, 14 pp, cream title wrappers, stab sewn, 31.4 x 21 cm pagination stamps to the recto of each leaf, in very good condition. Comprehensive summary for Surinam, then a Dutch plantation colony. The report notes in addition to regular crops cocoa, bananas, sugar and rice) the planting of rubber, prospecting for gold by "pork knockers" and inducing colonial settlers (the report notes the arrival of 633 migrants for the year, "from British India under indenture") to plant "Surinam" coffee.

Accompanied by official letter of the de-acquisition of these reports. Three comprehensive trade reports for Shanghai for 1901-4, 1905 and 1906. The final by British diplomat, explorer and businessman, Archibald Rose (1879-1961) notes "Th port of Shanghai is now recognised as the greatest distributing centre of the Far East.it becomes each year of greater interest to the manufacturer and producer, both in the United Kingdom and in India, Canada and Australia.and the port.now ranks as the eighth shipping port in the world." De-accessioned from the University of Hull Library, sold with their letter of consent.

Blue cloth covered boards, stamped in blind and lettered in gilt. Spine decorated and lettered in gilt. Cloth on the upper corner faintly discoloured, small puncture mark on the spine, endpapers browned but an attractive copy. Eight short stories set mostly in Asia. 20 x 13cm. Bertram Lenox Simpson (1877-1930) was a British author who wrote about China under the pen name "B. L. Putnam Weale" (or sometimes simply "Putnam Weale"). Lenox Simpson was the son of Clare Lenox-Simpson, who had been in the Chinese Maritime Customs Service since 1861; he had a brother, Evelyn, a mining engineer who worked in China, and a sister, Esme. His education was at Brighton College, after which he too joined the Service. He was in China during the Boxer Rebellion and during the siege of the legations. After this, he became Brigade Interpreter for the British Expeditionary Force. (Wikipedia).

Engraved map on laid paper, in original uncoloured state, 19 x 24 cm; 25.1 x 30.3 cm (sheet), original folds, a trifle spotted and browning to one of the folds, but in good condition. Fine map of the Iranian island of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, by Jacques Nicolas Bellin published in Prevost's "Histoire generale des Voyages .". Traditional Persian vessels can be seen bobbing in the foreground and numbers of merchant vessels to the East, illustrating the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, and the competition for access to trading routes. Sites of fresh water are noted and the Portuguese fortress to the north of the island is delineated. A beautiful map.
