Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited edition,"The only edition". Two hundred and fifty-one copies printed." This is copy #53. Contains 109 articles by different authors, each signed with pen and ink.Preface signed: Rossiter Johnson, John Denison Champlin, George Cary Eggleston, editing committee. Small folio (34 cm) xvi pages, 1 leaf, 588, [4] pages. Title in red and black; head and tail pieces; initials. Original full straight-grained morocco, stamped in gilt and blind, over thick wooden boards, T.e.g. Some of the autographed authors are Mark Twain,Frank R. Stockton,Theodore Roosevelt, Andrew Carnegie, William Dean Howells and 104 more. Johnson thinks that over 30 copies were not bound and sold separately for the autographs (Johnson, 128). Of these perhaps, were "8 'extras' left over at the bindery when complete sets were assembled. Sent to Walter L. Brown by George Iles, August 31, 1912." and involved Contributions by 8 writers with their signatures. In any event more may have been broken since because the 109 autographs would bring more than the book has been valued. This is a very fine copy of a very scarce book.
