Wear on the corners of the dustjacket with a few nicks and short tears around the edges; no interior markings. Up and down the East Coast from Halifax to the Caribbean, Captain Haylestone carries freight in his old, wooden double-ender. Life is often hard for a ship owner trying to turn a profit, and the Captain is forced to use whatever means are available. His seamanship is as crafty as his business dealings and under steam or sail, in fog or storm, he almost always gets there, cargo intact and reputation untarnished, avoiding the law most of the time. Hardcover. Condition: VG. Dust Jacket Condition: VG. Photos, Diagrams (illustrator). 1st. 1st. 22cm By 14.5cm. The author tells his story of the Battle of the Atlantic through Canadian eyes as he commanded escort ships and finally a destroyer of the RCN, one being the Flower class corvette Sackville, now the only survivor of her type, preserved in Canada. Easton was continually in command for four years, through the worst stages when U-Boats were decimating the convoys to the D-Day invasion, including his destroyer action against German counterparts. A compelling and engrossing account of the war at sea, compiled from records Easton made immediately after hostilities and later extended to book form. 287 pages, four b/w photos, few intext maps, diagrams. Blue hard covers with gilt spine titles VG with lightly bumped lower front corner, which has small white spot. Small brown margin stains front e/papers, light felt pen stripe lower page edges, text block otherwise excellent. Pict DJ price clipped, few small chips, light wear edges and front flap fold, also some surface wear, but still VG.
