Pictorial paper over boards hardcover bindings, green cloth spines, gilt titles, green top page ridge. Includes the edition of Jane Eyre featured in the major motion picture 'Definitely Maybe'. Jane Eyre is a famous and influential novel by English writer Charlotte Brontë. It was published in London, England in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Co. with the title Jane Eyre. An Autobiography under the pen name "Currer Bell". Jane Eyre is a first-person narrative of the title character, a small, plain-faced, intelligent and honest English orphan. The novel goes through five distinct stages: Jane's childhood at Gateshead, where she is abused by her aunt and cousins; her education at Lowood School, where she acquires friends and role models but also suffers privations; her time as the governess of Thornfield Manor, where she falls in love with her Byronic employer, Edward Rochester; her time with the Rivers family at Marsh's End (or Moor House) and Morton, where her cold clergyman-cousin St John Rivers proposes to her; and her reunion with and marriage to her beloved Rochester at his house of Ferndean. Partly autobiographical, the novel abounds with social criticism and sinister gothic elements. Jane Eyre is divided into 38 chapters; most editions are at least 400 pages long (although the preface and introduction on certain copies are liable to take up another 100). The original was published in three volumes, comprising chapters 1 to 15, 16 to 26, and 27 to 38. Brontë dedicated the novel's second edition to William Makepeace Thackeray." "Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centers (as an adjective, Wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather). The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, and how this unresolved passion eventually destroys them and many around them. Now considered a classic of English literature, Wuthering Heights met with mixed reviews by critics when it first appeared, mainly because of the narrative's stark depiction of mental and physical cruelty. Though Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was originally considered the best of the Brontë sisters' works, many subsequent critics of Wuthering Heights argued that its originality and achievement made it superior. Wuthering Heights has also given rise to many adaptations and inspired works, including films, radio, television dramatisations, a musical by Bernard J. Taylor and songs (notably the hit "Wuthering Heights" by Kate Bush), ballet and opera. Signed by illustrator.

The Thornton edition of the Sisters Bronte. Octavo, 12 volumes, bound in three quarter calf by Bayntun, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, raised bands, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers, illustrated. In fine condition. An exceptional set. The Brontes were a nineteenth-century literary family associated with the village of Thornton in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England. The sisters, Charlotte, Emily, and Anne are well known as poets and novelists. Like many contemporary female writers, they originally published their poems and novels under male pseudonyms: Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Their stories immediately attracted attention, although not always the best, for their passion and originality. Charlotte's Jane Eyre was the first to know success, while Emily's Wuthering Heights, Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall and other works were later to be accepted as masterpieces of literature.

3 volumes. RARE FIRST EDITION of the great masterpiece by Charlotte Bronte. 8vo, in very attractive bindings of full tan calf, the spines richly gilt decorated in compartments between raised gilt decorated bands, the boards gilt framed, two of the spine compartments with contrasting red and green morocco labels gilt lettered and decorated. Publisher's ad catalogue is retained and bound in. [xiii], 303; 304; 304; with the catalogue of advertisements pp. A very fine copy, beautifully preserved and clean throughout. RARE, AND ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER BOOKS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE. JANE EYRE IS NOT ONLY THE FIRST NOVEL PUBLISHED BY CHARLOTTE BRONTE, but is also the first published of the Bronte Sisters. In an amazing year for them, all three published a work in 1847 under a 'Bell' pseudonym. Charlotte's was first, the two others were Emily's Wuthering Heights (published as Ellis Bell) and Anne's Agnes Grey (published as Acton Bell). All three are very scarce indeed. JANE EYRE is especially scarce, the print run of the first edition was approximately only 500 copies. It is a cornerstone book of multiple collections; early novels, English literature, Women's literature. It is a work which helped to define the novel as we know it. With its internalization of action, its focus on the gradual unfolding of Jane's moral and spiritual sensibility it creates a heightened intensity that was previously the domain of poetry and thus it revolutionized the art of fiction. It is also considered a full generation ahead of its time for the individualistic character of Jane and the novel's exploration of classism, sexuality, religion, and what has been coined 'proto-feminism'.

Exceptionally rare three American first year editions bound as one volume in three-quarter brown leather binding with tooled leather bands and gilt lettering on the spine and marbled end pages. Binding is firm and leather is stable with moderate wear to the edges; pages dusty with age toning and light to moderate foxing/soiling. Height measures 9.25-inches. Double column text. Volumes include: 1.Jane Eyre dated 1848 with Currer Bell listed as edited by, 174 pages. 2. Wuthering Heights dated 1848 with the book's author mis-attributed to "the author of Jane Eyre" when in fact it was written by her sister Emily Bronte, 112 pages. Published by Coolidge & Wiley in Boston near the same day as the Harper & Brothers, NY edition so uncertainty exists in the scholarship as to which edition first appeared in America; however, the Coolidge edition appears as the less common edition. 3. Shirley dated 1850 with Currer Bell 'Author of Jane Eyre" listed as author, 206 pages. These American editions are generally less common than their British counterparts and rarely found bound in one volume. Rare opportunity to own three editions that revolutionized and forever changed English literature.
