Lower left front corner bears an identification/file number: 104-6 in ink & he has added: Miss Cornell under the image in ink. Part of a larger series produced by Hakanson for publicity purposes for the Hanna Theatre of Cleveland, Ohio. A number of his photographs were devoted to Katherine Cornell; this is from a production, entitled: "Katherine Cornell 'Herod and Mariamne' An Adaptation by Clemence Dane with Fritz Kortner, Florence Reed, McKay Morris, Kent Smith. Staged by Guthrie McClintic [-]". He took a number of stage shots of the performance, as well as his own series devoted to Katherine Cornell dressing and removing her make-up in the Hanna Theatre's dressing rooms. "Dear Jon: So very many thanks for the marvelous way you took care of me during the four weeks we were in Detroit. I can't tell you how impressed I am with the easy smooth way in which you handle your very complicated affairs and the consideration that you show for artists, so-called. I'm sorry that the film festival idea didn't work out, but maybe at a later date. Will you be coming to Baltimore at all? If so do let me know ahead of time so that I can buy you a drink and that we may chat without professional considerations interfering. Thanks again and best regards always. [signed] Jose Ferrer. Gilt borders around the covers, single gilt line on the cover edges, sewn headbands. Binding is unsigned, but appears to be from the 1800-40 period. Engraved, early 19th century armorial bookplate of: Alexander Thomson of Banchory Esquire, on the front paste-down, with another modern bookplate above this. Spine ends show some chipping, wear; the front cover hinge is split, and the front cover is detached, wear to covers. Endpapers show some tanning, tanning to margins of the titlepage. Marbled edges, with sewn headbands, and dark green silk bookmarker bound in; marbled endpapers, binding is unsigned but of the 1800-50 period. Ink inscription on the reverse of front, marbled endpaper: From Mr [?] Knapp to Call. Cover edges, corners show some wear, rubbing, with loss of surface to covers, some small nicks to spine. Margins of the titlepage show tanning, a few scattered spots to some page margins. Former owner's bookplate on the front paste-down. Scan shows the spine & part of the front cover. Weight: 4 lbs.
