Condition of covers and spine are fair to good, binding could be repaired/restored. Some pencil notes by a previous bookseller on title page regarding provenance and history of this set. Could be erased, but I'd rather leave it to the new owner to decide. VOL. II: All hinges solid, textblock solid. Some minor wear to corners/edges, but by itself this volume would be VG. VOL. Raoul de Hodencl; Keith Busby, ed.
Bookseller: Posthoc Books [IOBA] (Grafton, NH, U.S.A.)
Seller Rating: 5-star rating
Quantity: 1

Book Description: Soft cover. Condition: Fine. ix + 175 pp. Utrecht Publications in general and comparative literature Volume 17. Publisher's label on inside front cover noting "Review Copy." FINE. "Scholars and students working on the early courtly and chivalric literature of medieval Europe will have often felt the need for contemporary theoretical material with which to illustrate their arguments about courtesy and chivalry in romances, etc. The present volume, which presents critical editions of the two earliest didactic poems of this kind in the vernacular (both date from the first quarter of the thirteenth century), was conceived partly to fill this need. This book will be of interest not only to specialists in Old French literature, but also to those studying other literatures; both texts are known to have circulated in England in the fourteenth century and are therefore of importance for anglicists; L'Ordene de Chevalerie was adapted into Middle Dutch and Italian several times and provides excellent material for comparatists, netherlandists and italianists; moreover, given the germinal place of Old French literature in the culture of the Middle Ages, both poems are worthy of study in the context of the evolution of the ideals of courtesy and chivalry as European literary phenomenon. Each critical text is accompanied by an extensive literary introduction and philological apparatus, and translations into modern English prose have been appended to render the poems more accessible to non-romanists." Texts in OLD FRENCH, scholarly apparatus in ENGLISH. Seller Inventory # LF10801

Montaigne; Louandre, Charles, ed.
Bookseller: Posthoc Books [IOBA] (Grafton, NH, U.S.A.)

Book Description: 3/4 Leather. Condition: VG+. Montaigne's essays, critical edition by Chas. Louandre. A very fine edition in 4 volumes, bound in 3/4 black leather over elegantly marbled green and olive boards. Spines divided into compartments by 7 double-line gilt rules. Title and volume number in second compartment. All edges speckled in red. A remarkable copy, being previously owned by Lillie Hitchcock-Coit, the Firefighting Lady of San Francisco. Her name appears stamped in gilt in the lowest band of the spine of each volume, matching the style of the title and volume number. Whether she had the set bound or had her name added we do not know. Unusual provenance for a great work of Literature; an important copy. Some slight rubbing, small chips at top of spine of two volumes, very minor browning here and there throughout. All volumes tight and solid. A very handsome set. Text and commentary in French. Seller Inventory # FI04641
