Bookseller: Peter Keisogloff Rare Books, Inc. (Brecksville, OH, U.S.A.)
Seller Rating: 5-star rating
Quantity: 1

Book Description: Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. A collection of 45 handwritten sermons, or notes for sermons that were composed & delivered between 1783-1848 (some were delivered in several later years, again, and are so noted in later years). Number 45 seems to have been delivered by D.[aniel?] Dianiska in 1827 at Rima-Banyul. Sizes vary between 4 in. x 7 in. to 5 in. x 8 in., they are written in browned, or later black ink in several hands on a variety of mainly laid papers, light blue paper, etc. in Czech (some possibly in Slovak, as they were for a Slovak audience), and one in German, mostly in gothic fraktur style handwriting, with various additions, side-notes, underling, etc. These pages have been individually sewn to form small booklets; condition varies, with some showing faded ink, wear or stains, to the edges, some have source references at the bottom on the last pages. List of the 45 pieces (these are only approximate transcriptions from abbreviated script writing, giving the Sundays/Holy Days, when the Sermons were delivered, with the year; several were delivered again in later years, and those years were added at later dates): [1] 1783 Dnca [Dominica] XXIII. Ink color varies from faded brown, to black (possibly re-inked at a later date, on titlepages), on laid paper, some material is double columned, as if for comparision. Language appears to be Czech, but some early Slovak material may also be present. Pages shows some age-related stains, and signs of wear, as does the binding. Scarce, handwritten material (some, possibly, unpublished) used by Lutherans in Slovakia. Scan shows the title to the poem on the life of Martin Luther, with a facing page of text. Size of binding: 7 in. x 8 in. x 3 in. (thick). Handwritten calligraphic title-page, [2] blank leaves; (first page of handwritten titling & text, beginning): Premisslowanj Ewangeli ska Nedelnj. Nedele I. Adwentj.(through) Nedele XXVII. Po S. Trogicy. Texts are arranged for Sundays & Holy Days, beginning with Advent. Over 900 hand written pages, some parts are divided with blank leaves; in others, it appears some of these blank leaves have been cut out. We count 932 handwritten pages. Handwritten on laid paper, in one or more careful hands in what appears to be Czech, with possibly, some early Slovak material also present. Bound in full, dark brown, old calf with four raised bands on the spine, decorative, blind-stamped borders on the covers, surrounding a central rectangular area, with central blind-stamp of the Lamb & Banner device in an oval form, floral tooling in corner. Leather bands and clasps are lacking, except one of the metal clasp-posts on the lower right of the front cover; sewn headbands, and edges sprinkled red. Initials on front cover (above the rectangle): J. M. [Jan Mathuska], and partly worn-off date, below the rectangle: 17[7]2. The front hinge along the spine shows a split, exposing some of the binding materials; leather covers show wear and signs of use, with splitting to the inner hinges, and partial separation of the blank endpapers (which show penciled math, subtracting 1771 from various years down to 1847, etc.) Some pages show stains, signs of age, and/or use. The scan shows the front cover of the binding. Scarce example of an 18th century Czech/Slovak bookbinding on a handwritten Sunday Services book that was used by Slovak Lutherans.
