Bar Sinistre. Story & Pictures By Frances Lauren. [Phyllis Ann Karr/Penny Karmilowicz].

Quantity: 1
Book Description: 8 1/4" x 11", 174 pp., black & white reproductions of author's drawings by mimeograph or early "xerox" type method. Entire typed text & printed music is also reproduced in this style & then hard-bound. Full, dark green, leather-grained cloth with gilt stamped figures of knight & squirrel on front cover. Author s small, inked presentation/gift inscription on lower part of pictorial titlepage: Penny Karr June 11, 1968 With love & gratitude to the Ogles ; some age tanning to edges of pictorial endpapers, book edges. No dustjacket. Near fine/. Very scarce Arthurian/Celtic Britain item; which appears to be a self-published historical novel or stories with the author's drawings, but is also an early Phyllis Ann Karr item, signed as Penny Karr . The author says in the "Superfluous Preface": "[.] On the whole, I suspect that the world of my people more closely resembles that of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins than that of the historical King Arthur (when and if he lived), and there are worse worlds to wander in. And, while I may not have been true to the history books, I like to fancy that I have not been entirely untrue to the spirit of those medieval romancers who blithely confused Babylon and Bagdad, termed any non-Christian a Moslem, and painted Absalom, Solomon, and Pontius Pilate as medieval princes. [.] Highland, 1968". According to the "Acknowledgements" Frank Waters read the first story "Brandan & Alinor" & encouraged the author to write more. Contents: Brandan & Alinor, Astarte of the Outlaws, The Queen's Revenge, The Knight of the Green Chapel, The Killer-Horse of Stranggore, Sarras: The Goblet of Blood, The Hand of Allah, The Knight of the Bar Sinistre. Fair Eilean's Bridegroom, The Priestess of Mannawydden, Epilogue, The Songs. An early Phyllis Ann Karr title, writing as Frances Lauren. Author of The Arthurian Companion (1997), as well as, Idylls of The Queen (1982) and The Follies of Sir Harald (2001); both of which titles were developed from the stories in the earlier Bar Sinistre (1968).
