Book Description: Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 6 in. x 9 in., [46] pp., as 10 single-page tables, mounted on tabs, and another table of equivalents of the simple substances is on one leaf. Leather spine & sides with brown paper-covered boards and with a printed title label mounted on the front cover. Leather spine shows deterioration, with chipping away of much of the leather, covers show some damp, wear to cover edges/corners; endpapers show brown spotting, old damp stain through one-third of each flyleaf, and tables, with scattered tan spotting, possible signs of laboratory use. Embossed stamp in upper right of front endpaper: Gray Sprague Booksellers Albany, N.Y. First signature at the top of this page (appears to be) J.S. Mesker, beneath this is the signature and date, of 26 year old Theobald Smith (of Albany, New York): Theobald Smith June 1885. An early item from Smith's working library. This is a signed assocition item. To quote the Columbia Encyclopedia (1950) on Smith: "Smith, Theobald, 1859-1934, American pathologist, born Albany, N. Y., M.D. Albany Medical College, 1883. He was professor of bacteriology at Columbian (now George Washington) University (1886-95) and of pathology at Harvard (1896-1915) and served as pathologist with the Department of Agriculture (1884-95), the Massachusetts state board of health (1895-1915), and Rockefeller Institute (1915-29). He discovered the parasite causing Texas cattle fever and its transmission by the cattle tick, differentiated between human and bovine tuberculosis, and contributed greatly to preventive medicine. Spine is worn, edges worn, covers show age or lab spotting; inner hinges are nearly separated from the text, but appear to be re-attached. Printed on a thin paper showing some edge tanning & fragility. Bold signature of famous American biologist & pathologist Theobald Smith & date of 1888 in ink at top of front paste down & some pencil marks besides various text passages, most likely also by him. Excepting defects noted above, book is not in that bad of condition for a fragile & not expensively produced students' manual. An important association item. Signed presentation inscription in blue ink at top of first flyleaf: "Dr. Theobald Smith, with compliments of Samuel C. Prescott." Although not signed by Smith, it is a book he once owned. Prescott was co-author of Prescott & Dunn's Industrial Microbiology, still a standard text. The Effront book was an important text in the field of the organic chemistry of enzymes. Though without his signature, this copy is from the library of Theobald Smith (1859-1934); with an inserted autograph letter signed (that was sent to Smith, and inserted by him into this book) The ALS is on a folded note sheet of 8 in. x 9 3/4 in. paper, watermarked: Crane's Distaff Linen 1905, with printed heading: United States Department of Agriculture, Office of Consulting Scientific Experts. Without addressee's name, or envelope. [Text]: "Trip to Boston cancelled.-Confinded to house by grip. Test of tubercle bacilli easy. [cancelled lines: Need not be] Need not be done here. Do not ^ now feel competent to advise. Should talk it over together here first. [signed]: Prof. Robt F. Foerster 219 South St Paul Ave Pittsburgh Pa." On the inside of this note, some chemical formulas have been added in pencil (possibly by Theobald Smith), approximately: Cu Cl2 + CN K2 Fe2 (CN)6 Cu Fe (CN)6 2Hg. N O3 Hg2 O. N2 O5. This book came from a small group of other books owned by Theobald Smith. To quote the Columbia Encyclopedia (1950) on Smith: "Smith, Theobald, 1859-1934, American pathologist, born Albany, N. Y., M.D. Albany Medical College, 1883. He was professor of bacteriology at Columbian (now George Washington) University (1886-95) and of pathology at Harvard (1896-1915) and served as pathologist with the Department of Agriculture (1884-95), the Massachusetts state board of health (1895-1915), and Rockefeller Institute (1915-29). He discovered the parasite causing Texas cattle fever and its transmission by the cattle tick, differentiated between human and bovine tuberculosis, and contributed greatly to preventive medicine. He wrote 'Studies in Vaccinal Immunity' (with R. B. Little, 1923) and 'Parasitism and Disease' (1934).". Interesting association item, that might repay further research.
