Bookseller: Peter Keisogloff Rare Books, Inc. (Brecksville, OH, U.S.A.)
Seller Rating: 5-star rating
Quantity: 1

Book Description: Soft cover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Size: 3 3/8 x 4 7/8 , an antique valentine, or other type of greeting card, which may be partly commercially produced, or, just as likely, partially handmade & assembled; with small, applied cut-out chromolithographic figures & details that have been pasted on. The front consists of a flap of cut & embossed lace paper, which opens to the right to reveal a small (1 1/8" x 1 1/4") square, pasted color litho. of an alpine cottage & scene (visible through the center of the lace frame); this is pasted on a small sheet of coated blue paper, which is pasted to a thiner sheet of white paper backing. With 4 small pasted embossed chromolithographic figures: at top, a group of crocus with printed legend: To little Birdie. Two small floral bouquets (one featuring roses) on each side, and a standing figure grouping of two children in alpine-style dress at bottom. Many of these type of small, fine chromolitho. figures were produced in Germany during the later 19th century & feature the "alpine" details of dress or scenery, shown here. This piece has been removed from a larger paper sheet or album, at some point, and the thin white backing paper is still covered with part of the thicker album paper sheet, that this piece was pasted on (this is possibly removable by an expert paper conservator). These age-related defects are present: portions of the outer edges of thin white backing paper have been torn or chipped away, or were clipped by the person who originally mounted this item; this paper may have originally opened like the lace front (?), but was pasted to the blue paper by the owner; 2 very small paste spots to surface of the blue paper, which have removed the surface blue & transfered it to the back of the lace, small damp (?) stain long upper right fore-edge of the blue paper (visible in the scan), slight wear to left edge of lace margin, & adhering paste to back of piece, with small tear to lower right margin; scattered, light tan spotting t outer lace paper surface. (Scan shows the front of this piece, slightly enlarged). This quite attractive piece, which is suitable for framing, might be entirely hand assembled from purchased items (lace paper form & blue & white paper backings), with small alpine cottage scene inside, and four chromolitho. figures then applied to the lace surface. This card may or may not have been actually designed or used as a Valentine's Day card. This is an authentic antique piece, not a reproduction. Sold as an example of chromolithographic printing and embossed & machine cut lace paper. Seller Inventory # ABE-195263028

Seller Rating: 5-star rating
Quantity: 1

Book Description: Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 10 1/4 in. x 7 in., 352 pp., 131 in-text woodcut illustrations of plant details, cells, lab equipment, etc. Black cloth spine & printed paper-covered boards. Spine is worn, edges worn, covers show age or lab spotting; inner hinges are nearly separated from the text, but appear to be re-attached. Printed on a thin paper showing some edge tanning & fragility. He was professor of bacteriology at Columbian (now George Washington) University (1886-95) and of pathology at Harvard (1896-1915) and served as pathologist with the Department of Agriculture (1884-95), the Massachusetts state board of health (1895-1915), and Rockefeller Institute (1915-29). Strasburger, Eduard & Theobald Smith (1859-1934; former owner).
Bookseller: Peter Keisogloff Rare Books, Inc. (Brecksville, OH, U.S.A.)
Seller Rating: 5-star rating
Quantity: 1

Book Description: Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. A copy that belonged to Theobald Smith, with his signature on the titlepage. [Printer:] Druck von C. Grumbach in Leipzig. Foreword dated: March, 1884. 6 in. x 9 in., xxxvi, 664 pp. + [4] pp.of ads for microscopes (Boecker, Schieck), and scientific supplies. With 182 woodcut illustrations (of microscopes, laboratory equipment, cells, etc., seen under the microscope). Dark brown, pebbled cloth with a printed paper title label mounted on the spine, reading: Botanische Praticum.; marbled paper end-papers. The cover edges show wear, with a strip of the binding cloth torn away from the fore-edge section of the front cover (see scan), and the nearby cloth pasted down, (might be a laboratory accident here?); inner backing of the binding has split through at page 32-33 & pp. 544-545, leaving the binding nearly separate from the text, some creasing to upper corners of pp. [i]-32, stains to some page margins; many page (edges) are unopened after p. 76. This copy belonged to Theobald Smith, who has signed his name at the upper right of the title-page. At page 20 (discussing starch cells), he has inserted a (5 1/4 in. x 4 3/4 in.) student drawing and notes, with the starch and liver cells sketched in pencil and these ink notes added to identify these drawings (see scan): [b 2 drawings] [a 1 drawing]: Starch grains from the common white bean a. showing polar cavity b. polarized [ 1 larger drawing]: 4/29-[18] 87 fatty degeneration of peritoneal covering of liver in rabbit. This was once attached to the page by a small dot of gum; the paper shows some age-related tanning. At page 217 he has inserted a commemorative white silk ribbon as a bookmark, this is a fine image of George Washington in a floral border, with this inscription: "In Commemoration of laying the CORNER STONE of the WASHINGTON MONUMENT. Octr. 19th. 1847." This fragile silk ribbon shows tanning, small stains, creases, and has a double horizontal tear through the silk at the base of the Washington portrait (see scan). To quote the Columbia Encyclopedia (1950) on Smith: "Smith, Theobald, 1859-1934, American pathologist, born Albany, N. Y., M.D. Albany Medical College, 1883. He discovered the parasite causing Texas cattle fever and its transmission by the cattle tick, differentiated between human and bovine tuberculosis, and contributed greatly to preventive medicine. He wrote 'Studies in Vaccinal Immunity' (with R. B. Little, 1923) and 'Parasitism and Disease' (1934)." These three items are sold together only: the copy of the German student's manual belonging to & signed by Theobald Smith (with the damage, as noted above); the (1887) student's drawing made by him and added to this book, and the printed-on-silk Washington ribbon/bookmark, that he might have inherited, and later added to this book. German text. Seller Inventory # ABE-382778734
