Paddling the Frontier is a guidebook for explorers of selected whitewater rivers in the mountainous regions of Pakistan. Although it was meticulously accurate when compiled in 1987-1989, the last two decades have brought social turmoil, flooding and earthquakes of literally Himalayan proportions to that region. Modern paddlers would have to take its descriptions with great caution. It remains a unique snapshot of Pakistan in an earlier era, and a footnote to the development of whitewater sport.

About the Author:

Lieutenant Colonel Wickliffe (Wick) Walker (United States Army, retired) is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the John F. Kennedy School for Special Warfare. He represented the United States in international whitewater canoe competition at the World Championships of 1965, 1967, and 1971, and at the 1972 Summer Olympics at Munich. He has led whitewater expeditions around the world, including Bhutan in 1981 and Tibet in 1998. Wick is the author of Courting the Diamond Sow: A Whitewater Expedition on Tibet's Forbidden River (National Geographic Adventure Press) and of Paddling the Frontier: Guide to Pakistan's Whitewater. His Goat Game: Thirteen Tales from the Afghan Frontier is scheduled for publication in December 2012. Wick is a Fellow of The Explorers Club. He and his wife raise horses on a small farm in southwestern Pennsylvania.
