This book brings together essays on the Stratford Festival, on Shakespeare in Quebec, and on Canadian dramatic adaptations of Hamlet and Othello by Ric Knowles, one of Canada’s leading drama and theatre scholars. The essays discuss such major figures as Robert Lepage, Ann Marie MacDonald, Djanet Sears, Michael O’Brien, Ken Gass, Robin Phillips, Marco Micone, and Martine Beaulne. Taken together they explore both the role that Canada has played in contemporary understandings of Shakespeare, and the role that Shakespeare has played in the constitution of postcolonial Canadian subjectivity and nationhood.

About the Author:
The Author: Ric Knowles, professor of drama at the University of Guelph, is the editor of Modern Drama and an editor of Canadian Theatre Review. He is the author of The Theatre of Form and the Production of Meaning: Contemporary Canadian Dramaturgies (1999) and Reading the Material Theatre (2004), co-editor of Staging Coyote’s Dream: An Anthology of First Nations Drama in English (2003) and of Modern Drama: Defining the Field (2003), and editor of Theatre in Atlantic Canada (1988). He has published over eighty chapters and articles on Shakespeare and on Canadian drama and theatre.
Review:
«This is a book that no reader of ‘Theatre Research in Canada’ dare ignore: Shakespeare may not be your primary research area, but it is here the occasion through which Knowles raises a range of questions for all of theatre studies in Canada. More importantly still, he proposes – and effectively so – a future terrain that only our collective diligence and interest can begin to address.» (Susan Bennett, Theatre Research in Canada)
