Synopsis

Set in Oxford, this novel about frustrated relationships, desire, and grief centers around an accident and its consequences, both intended and not. Stephen Jervis is a married philosophy professor in the midst of a midlife crisis who falls in love with a young German student already engaged to a British aristocrat. When an accident leaves the fiancé dead and the student injured, Jervis takes advantage of his wife's absence to care for her. Preconceived notions about each of the characters' guilt are brought into question as the story unfolds through a series of flashbacks that include a famous writer who happens to be Jervis's best friend.

 

Ambientada en Oxford, esta novela sobre relaciones frustradas, anhelos y quebrantos revuelve alrededor de un accidente y sus consecuencias, ya hayan sido intencionales o no. Stephen Jervis es un profesor de filosofía casado que está sufriendo una crisis de identidad y que se enamora de una joven estudiante alemana comprometida a un aristócrata inglés. Cuando un accidente deja al comprometido muerto y a la estudiante averiada, Jervis aprovecha la ausencia de su esposa para cuidarla. Las ideas preconcebidas sobre la culpa de cada uno de los personajes son cuestionadas mientras la historia se va desarrollando mediante una serie de recuerdos que incluyen a un famoso escritor que resulta también ser el mejor amigo de Jervis.

Nicholas Mosley is a British novelist who served in Italy during World War II. His father Oswald Mosley founded the British Union of Fascists and was a public supporter of Hitler and Mussolini; Nicholas Mosley's opposition to his father's ideal subsequently informed much of his literary work. His novels include Hopeful Monsters, Impossible Object, and The Only Victor.
