Parodiant Shakespeare et le drame historique, méprisant toutes les conventions théâtrales Jarry crée en Ubu un personnage inclassable, caricature de l'homme de pouvoir, et symbole de la bêtise humaine... dont on ne sait trop s'il faut rire ou pleurer.
