Set in a small town on the south coast of the Korean peninsula, The Curse of Kim's Daughters tells the heartrending story of the five daughters of Songsu Kim, a small fishing fleet owner. Kim is orphaned when his father runs away from home and her mother takes poison. Raised by his uncle, he inherits the family pharmacy and later invests in a small fishing fleet. He marries Punshi of his uncle's choosing and has five daughters, but curse is the undercurrent of their lives — the eldest daughter by an allegation of baby murder; the second daughter by a failed love affair; the third by insanity resulting from her shameless pursuit of personal happiness; and the fourth by a grave misfortune at sea.

Intriguing and engaging, The Curse of Kim's Daughters takes a fascinating look at the vast evolution of the Korean society in the first half of the 20th century and will be of interest to any reader who wants to know something about Korea and its people.

About the Author:
Born in 1926, Park Kyong-ni is one of the most accomplished writers in Korea. Park is best known for her voluminous novel Land (1994), which is a powerful rendition of one family's saga through Korea's dark history in the first half of the 20th century. Her other major works include A Floating Island (1959), The Curse of Kim's Daughters (1962), and The Marketplace and the Battlefield (1964). She is currently at work on a new novel called Butterfly.
From Booklist:
Songsu Kim's heritage is troubled, for his mother committed suicide, and his hot-tempered father fled. Raised by Uncle Pongjay, he grows to successful manhood, marries, and, after the death of his first and only son, has five daughters. But does a curse hover over the family? This novel dating from 1962, when women were seldom focal characters in Korean literature, depicts the lives of the five daughters in the fishing town of Tongyong during Korea's transition from Hermit Kingdom to the first half of the twentieth century. Traditionally handcrafted hats, tables, and black lacquer furniture give way to encroaching technology but as slowly as Park's contemplative account of the women's changing lives traces familial antecedents and resemblances. Those who savor leisurely pacing will find herein a treasury of nuanced detail and a delicately textured portrait of society. Westerners may be confused, however, by the similarity of characters' names: Yongsook, Yongbin, Yongnan, Yongok, and Yonghay are the five daughters. Whitney Scott
