As an artist, you shouldn’t feel constrained to replicate exactly from reference photos—if you want to change or add something you should. The freedom is yours.

Step One

I start by toning my canvas with thinned yellow ochre. I prefer linen canvas mounted to hard board (Gator Board). On larger paintings like this, I sometimes draw grid lines to help me paint more accurately. Working with a thinned mixture of alizarin crimson and sap green, I sketch out a basic drawing of the mountains and bay, using a No. 6 filbert brush. I establish a horizon line and pay close attention to perspective, depth, and placement of the visual elements. Figures tend to draw the attention of the viewer, so I take my time drawing them and try to add character and movement to their poses.

Marcia Baldwin is a professional artist in Louisiana who specializes in vibrant oil paintings. After many years working in and around art--making a living as an advertising designer, art teacher, art consultant, photographic artisan and many other niches--Marcia finally opened her own art studio dedicated to fine art. Formerly trained in art, she has earned both a BFA and an MFA.

James Sulkowski maintains a studio in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and is a member of the National Arts Club, The National Society of Mural Painters, and the American Artists Professional League, among others.

Lorraine Gray is a pet portrait artist, working in pastels, oil, and acrylic, in Berkshire, England. Jim McConlogue lives in Encinitas, California with his wife and three children. He paints with oil, both in plein-air and out of his home studio. Varvara Harmon is an award-winning multimedia artist who works with oil, acrylic, watercolor, silk paintings, and ink and pencil drawings.
