It takes place over a roughly 12-hour span in Amity, Colorado. A trio of rascals, hired by some rich folks in Denver, plans to assassinate the governor when he makes a stop through town. Overholser deftly balances the throbbing, tense atmosphere as the hours count down, detailing every last bead of sweat from the killers, who desperately try not to get too boogery when the fatal hour arrives, and the sheriff, who races to save his beloved, her family, and the governor all at once.
