From School Library Journal:
Grade 1-Captain Bingham Bear and his cartoon character crew invite users to choose among several activities in this colorful, happy software program designed to help youngsters practice content area skills and build computer skills. Since first graders are eager to demonstrate their independence and skills, they are a perfect target audience for this format. Clicking on one of five doors or portholes of the ship allows students access to one of the activities. One door is a learning game in which players select a category: ABC's, addition facts, subtraction facts, money or time. They use a hook controlled by either the mouse or the arrow keys to catch a sea creature stamped with the correct answer on its belly. Correct answers are praised intermittently and scored onscreen. Questions answered incorrectly appear again without comment. Another door is a dot-to-dot using numbers or letters for sequencing practice. A third door opens to a character that tells a different joke or riddle each time that door is clicked. The movie door provides eight choices of short movies, and an art studio door allows users to draw with tools similar to a KidPix program or paint coloring book style pictures. Except for typing user name at the start of the program, all other functions are controlled by the mouse or arrow keys, which is an excellent developmental exercise for eye-hand coordination. The program is easy to install and uninstall. Use is intuitive, but a help button is provided on every screen. The screens are bright, cheerful, and colorful with snappy music accompanying each section. Students can exit any activity at any time and choose a different activity without leaving the program. Kids will enjoy their successes in using this program while they practice essential skills. Teachers and parents will feel their youngsters are spending productive time at the computer. This is an engaging piece of software for first graders or older students in special education or bilingual programs.
