About the Author:
Candice A. Shoemaker is the former director of the School of the Chicago Botanic Garden. She is currently an Associate Professor of Horticulture at Kansas State University. Her current research involves Human Issues in Horticulture.
From Booklist:
Produced under the auspices of the Chicago Botanic Garden and edited by the former director of the school there, this comprehensive resource provides information on garden history and design. The contributors, the majority of whom are from the U.S and Great Britain, fulfill the aim of the work, which is to describe and provide analysis of garden-related individuals, places, and topics.

The entries are alphabetically arranged and vary in length from a page to more than 10 pages for the entry United States. Depending on whether the entry deals with an individual, a place, or a topic, it includes an essay, a biography, a list of works, a chronology, and a bibliography. Examples of individuals who are covered include Joseph Addison, whose writings in The Spectator had an influence on English garden design; Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus; and the Olmsteads, father and son landscape architects who made their mark in cities across the U.S. Because garden design is also a profession of women, there are entries for Jocelyn Brown of Australia, Sylvia Crowe of England, and Ellen Shipman of the U.S., to name a few. The editor notes that the volume is Eurocentric, so there are entries for many European countries and cities while other areas of the world are covered in survey articles. However, Japan and China do have separate entries. Examples of topics covered include Botanical illustration, Landscape architecture, Modernism, Ornamental plant, Pests and diseases, Wildflower, and Weed.

There is a general bibliography after the list of entries and advisors in the beginning of volume 1. Volumes 2 and 3 also have the list of entries. Notes on and affiliations of the contributors follow the index in volume 3. Access to some of the individuals or places that do not have their own entries is provided through the index. Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, for example, does not have an entry but can be found in the index. Seamus Heaney is in the index because a poem written by him is in the poetry entry. Black-and-white photographs and drawings that are interspersed throughout the text are also noted in the index. A number of somewhat fuzzy color plates are inserted in each volume. The encyclopedia is current, with a mention of HGTV in the Journalism entry and a photograph of the FDR Memorial in Washington, D.C., in the United States article.

This is certainly a definitive source for garden design and history and is appropriate for academic and large public libraries. The recently reissued The Oxford Companion to Gardens (2001) could be a substitute for libraries that cannot afford this three-volume work. RBB
