The power, grace, and freedom of horses had always resonated deeply with Stromberg. Through his photographs of these magnificent beasts, he sees a way to bridge what he calls modern life’s disturbing separation between people and nature.” The result is Spirit Horses, showcasing 140 of Stromberg’s extraordinary color portraits of these animals, along with quotations from leading teachers and writers exploring equine wisdom and its intersection with spirituality. The photographs in Spirit Horses were shot in a variety of locales, from wildlife sanctuaries to private ranches to natural habitats in Europe and the western United States. These images and the accompanying quotes offer a portrait of horses as profound teachers, giving strength and stability to a world out of balance.

The two sides of the human relationship with horses are reflected in a new book celebrating the practical and the spiritual. Stromberg is a professional photographer who came to horses and riding later in life. Horses became his teachers, reminding him of valuable truths about the connection of people and nature. They speak to him of the wild and of a world without boundaries. The photos in this mostly wordless, coffee-table-size book reflect these beliefs, and are of horses unrestrained by riders or tack, mostly without enclosures. Printed in color, black and white, and sepia tones, they often show horses in motion, manes and tails flying, with dust or sheer movement blurring the edges of the photo. Many subjects are not well-groomed show horses but rather their wilder brethren with shaggy forelocks and rough coats. Sprinkled throughout are quotations that range from the Dalai Lama to Henry Beston to D. H. Lawrence. This lovely book will more than please horse lovers. Nancy Bent
