Although poverty is one of the most serious issues facing the world's population, finding statistical information on this subject has, in the past, required a significant amount of time and effort. Now, this volume provides researchers with a single, comprehensive resource that includes detailed information regarding the worldwide and regional impact of poverty in the developing world and on individual countries from authoritative sources including the World Bank and the UN Human Development Report. The Handbook includes statistics on economic indicators, demographic patterns, income distribution, and other factors that impact poverty in the world today. Two special sections focus on women and children and on poverty in selected cities worldwide.

Review:
"Even if a library does not need the content of this volume in its collection, every librarian and publisher should look at it for its design, clarity, and accessibility. The editors have prepared a model for other collections of social statistics information....The nature of the content makes this volume most useful in libraries that collect worldwide statistical sources, even if they already own one or more of the sources."-Booklist/RBB

"There is a definite need for this type of volume."-ARBA

"This work collects a wide range of published statistical information into a compact, easy to use volume. It will answer a wide range of questions and provide basic data for many research projects. Well organized with excellent reader aids, plus a reasonable price, this book is recommended for school, public, and academic libraries."-Reference & User Quarterly

"Major strengths of this handbook are its lucid explanation of the indicators in each section, the tabular and graphical presentation of the data, explicit citation of the data's source including Web address, and a well-designed index to income categories, specific indicators, or general subjects such as immunization. Recommended for all libraries, high school through graduate institutions as well as public."-CHOICE

"This reference book looks at poverty as a worldwide phenomenon, but with particular emphasis on developing nations. The book employs a relative scale based on the full scope of human deprivation existing throughout the world and targets poverty in the underdeveloped world."-Abstracts of Public Administration, Development, and Environment

"Responding to a need for understandable statistical material on world poverty, this book successfully compiles a comprehensive set of statistics (the latest available) from a wide variety of sources....Introductory material in each chapter and well-placed notes and explanations provide a user-friendly format. Recommended for larger public libraries, academic libraries, and specialized collections."-Library Journal
