From Library Journal:
This book presents a broad overview of the arts in contemporary Mexico, with interviews, photographs, and selections from the works of more than 50 of Mexico's most eminent living artists. All the arts are represented, from dance to architecture, from poetry to painting. Many of the names will be unfamiliar to North American readers, while others--such as Carlos Fuentes, Octavio Paz, and Rufino Tamayo--will be quite well known. As Peden demonstrates, the artistic and social worlds of all these artists intermix, as do their recurring themes of myth and death. The photographic portraits are an elegant accompaniment to Peden's text. Peden has published books on contemporary Latin American literature ( The Latin American Short Story: A Critical History , LJ 7/83) and has translated works of Paz, Fuentes, Sor Juana, Pablo Neruda, and others. Recommended for academic libraries and public libraries with strong collections in Latin American art and literature.

From School Library Journal:

YA-- In a series of interviews with 48 of Mexico's top artists, musicians, architects, poets, writers, and craftsmen, an interesting picture emerges of each person as a unique individual. Some, such as Carlos Fuentes, Octavio Paz and Jose Luis Cuevas, have a world-wide reputation. Others, like the three weavers from Oaxaca, are relatively unknown, except by those who recognize the quality of their work. Each interview allows the artists to describe their work and their influences and is accompanied by a photograph--often taken in their home. The result makes for a very intimate portrait. A tantalizing introduction to the contemporary creators of Mexico's culture.
