The author's first novel is a standard Western with a familiar plot. Jim Darnell, a fast gun, rides from Texas to Alamitos, New Mexico to aid a friend who, with others, is in danger of losing his ranch to a greedy land grabber. The law is a brutal and corrupt town marshall. Unusual in such a situation is the honest town council which appoints Darnell sheriff. Result--the fastest clean-up in the history of a wide open town. For Darnell, who dreams of a ranch and family, there is peace at last and Mary Kay, who is the most convincingly alive character in the story (she's based on the author's niece). This novel shows promise for its writer. He has a real flair for vivid description and brisk dialog.
