PreS-Gr 2--Harvey Hare, the postman, remembers that tomorrow is his birthday and decides to deliver party invitations to all of his friends. Of course, they're all busy baking and gathering seeds and nuts, and Harvey worries that no one will come to his celebration. Naturally, he arrives home and finds all of the animals in his garden with a cake and a feast. This story has a predictable plot, a lifeless text, and static illustrations. Even very young children will guess what's going to happen, and there's no fun along the way. The scratchy illustrations don't add any sense of warmth or friendship, and the text is so matter-of-fact that it doesn't involve readers in the set-up.
