From the Back Cover:
For twenty years, readers of The New York Times have looked forward to the Science Times section every Tuesday as one of the few national forums for high-quality science writing for the layman. Its features, written by award-winning journalists, deliver cutting-edge information and lucid analysis. The Science Times Book of Birds gathers the best articles on bird behavior and biology from Science Times, offering fascinating new evidence on the minds of birds, for example: that parrots' intelligence may rank with that of the dolphin and that birds' brains actually regenerate to store new information. Other discoveries in this collection include the fossil of a seventy-five-million-year-old flightless bird; the meddling ways of in-laws of Kenya's white-breasted bee-eaters; the practice of siblicide among cattle egrets; and crows' astonishing tool-making abilities. With this extraordinary volume comes the satisfaction of having gained a priceless new understanding of the world in which we live. (71/4 X 91/2, 292 pages, illustrations)
From Kirkus Reviews:
These collections intiate a new series from Lyons & Burford. The two volumes offer a terrific hodgepodge of articles from the New York Times's weekly science section, which Wade (A World Beyond Healing, 1987, etc.), edited for 6 of the 20 years since it was started. Each book contains 50 features, written by the likes of John Noble Wilford, Natalie Angier, and the Williams Broad and Stevens, but the intriguing, smoothly written contributions of Les Line to the bird book, and Catherine Dold and Carol Yaesuk Yoon to that on fish, pretty much steal the show. The emphasis here is on cutting-edge biological research--fantastic discoveries of the ocean's deep, studies in bird migration, the growing awareness of environmental perils--though there is also a goodly nod to nature-as-freak-show: fruit-eating fish, shape-shifting carp, cuckoos that run egg protection rackets, birds that can see magnetic fields, birds that fashion tools. All in all, a gratifying and artful blend of edification and entertainment. (line art, not seen) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
