Worship, spirituality, and community have become the three most important concerns for postmodern Christianity. Because our postmodern mood of faith is characterized by a new nostalgia for the past, this restoration of the medieval Prymer comes at a timely moment.

Filled with Scripture and the warm-hearted piety of the Middle Ages, this spiritual classic has been designed for personal or communal use in a one-day retreat, a weekly cycle, or a thirty-day cycle of prayer. Additional prayers for the Christmas and Easter seasons allow The Prymer to also function as a source of personal or congregational spirituality throughout the year.

From the Author:
"I became interested in reading pre-Reformation Spirituality because it has many similarities to my field of teaching in the history of theology. Some time ago I became interested in liturgy because I discovered it was a way of handing down the Christian Narrative from which our theology derives. I've since discovered the same about spirituality. Spirituality is reflection and identification with Christ. The Prymer brings liturgy and spirituality together in a unique way. The prayers focus on God's saving events in time so that our entire day is lifted into the cycle of creation, incarnation, re-creation. In this way the Prymer prayers lead us into a sanctification of time that results in a new way of "seeing" all of life."
From the Inside Flap:
Developed over a period of four hundred years, The Prymer functioned as the primary source for lay spirituality in the Middle Ages. Nearly all those who could read had their own personal copy, often beautifully decorated and bound.

Also known as the Little Book of Hours, The Prymer orders personal and communal spirituality around the daily office of morning and evening prayers; throughout the day it focuses on the hours of Christ's passion and death. The Prymer also includes prayers developed in the medieval era to deal with death and the myriad of life's hardships.
