As a thanks for being someone who is standing in the gap by teaching the next generation to love and know God, here is a free lesson...
SUPPLIESSeveral Legos, Lincoln Logs, or other connective/building toys
READ: 1 Peter 2:4-5 ENGAGEAnts are tiny little creatures. So tiny, in fact, that it would take over 151,000 of them piled onto your bathroom scale to weigh even just one pound. Obviously, this shows that one ant by itself can't do very much!
But ants are rarely by themselves, are they? They are always with MANY of their buddies. In fact, there was once a group of scientists that discovered a colony of ants taking down a large ten foot alligator! That's pretty impressive!
As Christians, we can be a lot like ants too. Maybe, by ourselves, we are small and can't do very much. But we shouldn't be by ourselves, should we? We should be joined together with others, so that we can take down Satan!
ASKWho remembers how many ants it takes to weigh one pound?
Ready to do some math? Use the number of ants it takes to weigh one pound, then see how many ants it would take to weigh as much as you. (You will most likely need to help with the math.)
Our Bible verses for today say that each Christian is like a stone in God's Temple. How impressive would a Temple be if it was made out of just one stone?
How many stones do you think it would take to make a Temple really big?
To be a stone in God's temple means you are involved in doing things for His kingdom. What things are you doing to help people know Jesus?
What are some things that you think you could do for Jesus this week?
DO- Tell the children that you are going to build something really cool with Legos (or with whatever connective/building toy you have). Pull out one Lego and place it at the center of the table, then state, "There! Wow! What do you guys think? Cool, right?"
- When the class shows that they don't think it is so cool, ask them what is wrong
- The class will mostly likely say that you need to have many pieces to make something that is cool
- With that, bring out the whole box of Legos and divide them evenly between the kids. Go around and allow each person to add to your first piece.
- Keep going until all the pieces are used up. As each child is adding pieces, continue onto the FOLLOW UP
FOLLOW UPTalk about the fact that one ant sure can't take down a ten-foot alligator, and one Lego, all by itself, doesn't make much. Likewise, Christians by themselves can't do too much either. We need many Christians joined together to do something awesome for Jesus
As the structure you are building gets bigger with each piece added, discuss things that a church can do when many people gather together--hold a VBS that needs many volunteers; have a church service with people ushering, greeting, praying, singing, playing instruments, preaching; gather cans of food for food drives; one person telling people about Jesus vs many people doing so, etc.
Finish by noting that it doesn't matter how old or young you are. Just as you can attach a brand new Lego piece to one that is ten years-old, so any Christian of any age can be part of something great at church!
FINISH UP~Thank God for the chance to be part of His family and His Temple
