Book Description Soft cover. Condition: Good. By the mid-1800s, the streets of New York City were home to several thousand homeless, abandoned and orphaned children, immigrants separated from their parents in the chaos of Ellis Island. Relief came with the establishment of the Children's Aid Society in 1853 by Charles Loring Brace. This society would gather orphans and send them west by train. At this time the American West was in need of laborers in both agriculture and industry, and many families were eager to provide foster homes to children who were willing to work. One of the agents of the Society was the Rev. Mr. Herman Clarke. This book is abut the life's work of this Reverend, who was a tireless devotee to the children entrusted to his care.
