Why It's Good to Have Desires
Man's reach should exceed his grasp,
or what's a heaven for?
-- Robert Browning
I am so pleased you have chosen this book as a means to express your true nature by learning to create all you desire. There is nothing wrong with desire. I repeat: there is nothing wrong with desire. In fact, everything is right about having and manifesting your desires. It is what keeps the Universe thriving. Desiring allows it to expand itself into more and more creations.
Each of you is a continuum of this energy that wishes to create and expand itself in new and adventurous ways. Think of history's pioneers: Columbus, Magellan, Leonardo da Vinci, Rosa Parks. All of these pioneers felt the desire to reach beyond what already existed and expand into a New World, whether it was discovering new lands, creating amazing inventions, or being a catalyst for civil liberties. We've explored our oceans and now continue to explore farther and farther into outer space. Just as these outer frontiers exist, so do the inner frontiers of our spirit, waiting for us to discover, uncover, and reveal them.
This eternal expansion is important for us to experience; this is why we're here on this big, blue planet. We've always been and always will be pioneers, eternally unfolding through the process of desire and manifestation.
Have you ever wondered where your desires come from? Do you sometimes feel as if they are choosing you rather than the other way around? Desire is part of life, and your desires desire you as much as you desire them. In metaphysical terms, you are matching frequencies with your desire, and your soul wants to manifest these desires to expand consciousness. Unfortunately, some preach that desires are a no-no and claim them to be the source of suffering. Have you ever seen children making sculptures with clay? Have you seen them finger painting or playing make-believe? They don't look like they're suffering to me. This is because their natural state is to be creative and full of desire. This doesn't change after we become adults. We may suppress our desires and our creativity, but we can never eliminate them because they are as natural to us as breathing.
Think about it this way. If no one had desires, the following things would not exist:
Sistine Chapel
airplanes
automobiles
medicine
babies
teachers
Mozart's music
your favorite books
your favorite movies
your favorite music
Earth itself and the Universe, for that matter
I want you to ask yourself some questions about the concept of desire. What were you taught? What are your beliefs about having desire? Is it good? Is it bad?
List below what you believe about having desires. Right or wrong? Suffering or joy? Something to embrace or overcome?
Before you play these games, it's important to give yourself absolute permission to have desires. Say the following affirmation if ever you doubt yourself about having desires: "Desire is a form of Love."
You may ask, "What about destructive desires that come from addictions? Is that a form of love?"
Let this be your meter to know which desires are appropriate:
AS LONG AS IT DOES NOT HARM YOURSELF
OR OTHERS TO HAVE THE DESIRE,
THEN IT IS OF LOVE.
Addictions and destructive urges are actually not desires. They are means of escaping from your true feelings. It is necessary to have authentic feelings in order for true desires to be born. When people spend the majority of their time numbing their authentic feelings with addictions, their inner guidance system can't access their true desires. True desires uplift and are helpful to the individual and to others. True desires feel good in a wholesome, healthy way. True desires are beautiful in the light of day.
One more important note about desires: many times clients have come to me desiring a specific person into or back into his/her life. But that person is clearly not interested in him/her romantically, or is with someone else, or is unloving. In this case, when my client asks if it's good to hold a desire for a specific person, I say, "You are limiting the Universe by telling it who would be the truest love for you. Tell the Universe that you want to feel in love, how you want to be treated, and how you want to treat the other. Then let the Universe work out the details of who it is and how they will come into your life." In this and in many other situations, it's best to describe how you want to feel, but not outline how that feeling should be manifested.
You'll know which desires are good for you by how they make you feel. If thinking about them makes you feel joyful, light, connected, and happy, and if they are not harmful to another, then your emotional guidance system is signaling that these desires are born of love.Copyright © 2005, 2008 by Denise Coates
