On leaving the Lampoon in 1978 he became notorious as editor of many best-selling parodies including "Not The New York Times" and "Off The Wall Street Journal" and the New York Times Best-seller "The 80s... A Look Back;" a notoriety which landed him in early 1983 on the cover of Newsweek. He then returned to the UK to create and co-produce the revolutionary satirical series ""Spitting Image with puppeteers Roger Law and Peter Fluck. The series ran in the UK for eleven years. In 1984 he starred in the enduring cult movie "This is Spinal Tap" as the band’s manager Ian Faith. Through the remainder of the 80s, he appeared in numerous movies and TV series such as "Miami Vice," and Whoopi Goldberg’s movie debut, "Jumping Jack Flash." He also wrote several books during this period, including a classic history of modern American satire "Going Too Far," which has been the base-line source for many biographical studies of major comic performers (example: long-time friend George Carlin recently profiled on A&E).
In 1993, Hendra was appointed Editor-in-Chief of "Spy Magazine." In 1996 he co-wrote with director Ron Shelton ("Bull Durham," "Tin Cup") a boxing comedy called "The Great White Hype" starring Jeff Goldblum and Samuel L. Jackson. He writes frequently for magazines such as "New York," "Harpers," "GQ," "Vanity Fair," "Men’s Journal," "Esquire" and many others. Current movie projects include "Blonde and Sand" at Warners and "Nice Couple Boys" at Universal. He appears regularly on NPR with Jane Curtin, Buck Henry and Robert Krulwich in the satirical year-end review Backfire; the Backfire team also performed for the President and Mrs. Clinton at the White House, during NPR’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. He is married to Carla Hendra, President North America of Ogilvy One, a global interactive agency; they have three young children, Lucy, Sebastian and Nicholas who are, all three, stunningly beautiful and bear almost no resemblance to their father.
