His unique sense of what would interest people was unerring. In the scope of his 22 years, there was not one complaint. That is remarkable in itself. He would follow up on stories in progress, and had a rapport with people that came across brilliantly in his broadcasts.
This collection is comprised of short pieces collected in the last four years of their travels 1992 1995. If you use this book, as people have used the first four volumes, to identify points of interest in their own travels, there may be some attrition in the ranks. The oldest driver (p. 113) has passed away, some few have moved, etc. We have left them in the book because they gave the flavour of his travels. Places were not static pieces; they involved people and their involvements with those places.
He has his own places of honour: the fond memories of his viewers; plaques installed in restaurants in Bancroft, Timmins, Midland, and others where he sat to write his stories. In Canada, that's as close to recognition of a cultural icon as we get.
News I've been surprised so many times that it's become almost routine.
Yet I still get a kick out of meeting ordinary people doing extraordinary things in out of the way places.
I was surprised to find a quiet man in a small town on the shores of Georgian Bay making beautiful violins out of matchsticks. And I chuckled at the quips of a surprising old sea dog who lives on the bank of the Welland Canal and is known by sailors the world over.
My wife Jenny, who doubles as a production assistant, shares my surprises in this playful prank called life. For the past twenty-odd years we've travelled the length and breadth of the province on the outlook for human interest yarns.
We're on the road almost constantly, staying at our favourite hotel along the way. I write the stories in restaurants, coffee shops, truck stops or wherever I happen to hang my hat. We don't look upon it as a job, it's more of a way of life.
In the following pages you'll read about some of our experiences and friends we've made. I've also tacked on, in longer stories, a few recollections of my childhood and early days as a journalist around the province.
I hope you'll find this book a journey of discovery. Not of distant realms but simply of people and places tucked away in various nooks and crannies of the Ontario countryside.
Bon Voyage.
