Feed an injured bird or animal and let him rest for awhile before working on his wounds. The only exception is if the wound demands immediate care because of profuse bleeding...Have on hand a glass of milk containing a little Karo syrup or sugar when working on a break or wound. If the bird shows signs of increasing stress, such as heavy breathing, give the patient a few drops of the liquid and allow him a little time to settle down before continuing to work...I always work from a sitting position with the bird on my lap...Place everything you need within reach on a table ready for instant use...It is better to treat a bird without an audience.

One caveat: the authors do not discuss the fact that all native birds are protected by the U.S. government and that anyone handling them is required to have a federal permit.
