This book is a collection of essays, articles and letters revolving around the subject of disability. Each written piece addresses a common theme; a realization of the adverse social position that disabled people find themselves in. The reality is of an able-bodied world which excludes, medicalises and controls those of its members who have not achieved normality. Problems which inevitably arise from this situation are seen as the individual's; a need to come to terms with a personal tragedy. This realization came to the author following her own move to the abnormal divide of society, after the onset of multiple sclerosis in 1976, at the age of 27. As a working class young woman in England, she had soon learned what it meant to be the underdog. It was a time of artistic and political upheaval and she realized that the world that she was born into was not a perfect one. As her knowledge grew, she came to see that her position as a working class woman was in common with others, she became the angry young woman and with many of her generation pursued a desire to change the way things are. During the turbulent sixties she traveled widely. Her beliefs were given a more coherent background when she entered university. She was, however, always to lead an unorthodox lifestyle. Although painfully aware of the position she had been placed in since the onset of her illness, she had never committed this to written form. After making contact with others in her position, she was approached to write a piece for an anthology. This she did, and from here on she committed herself wholeheartedly to the cause. There followed the formation of a feminist group and the devoting of her university time to theoretical work on the position of disabled people. As a feminist she had observed the parallels between women's treatment and that of disabled people. It represents an important social study, as well an example of one person's humanity and struggle for justice.
