With this brand-new version for 2002-03, we celebrate the 23rd consecutive year in print for this, the only complete handbook and guide that has ever been written for the unique job and lifestyle with which it deals. Since 1979, more than 110,000 purchasers, and countless other readers, have suddenly found themselves able to quickly and dramatically change their lives for the better, as they discover North America's great "sleeper" travel job... delivering brand-new RVs and specialty vehicles from their points of manufacturing and modification to their points of sale. Which frequently are hundreds, and even thousands of miles away. Such vehicles are always driven to those destinations. We never see an RV, an ambulance, a UPS delivery van, a school bus, or even a limousine being transported by truck, the way cars are. And people don't think about things they don't see. While these vehicles are being driven, they blend in perfectly with the rest of the traffic, and go completely unnoticed.

Thus, most people don't even realize that this job even exists, even though more than 100,000 people are doing it at any given time. And it's a very interesting mix of people who do it!

Fully one-third of them are seniors, age 65-80+. They are very much in demand, and just as employable as their younger counterparts, because insurance tables have revealed that this is the safest age group of drivers. In terms of providing work that is meaningful, enjoyable, lucrative, stress-free... and most importantly of all, readily-available, this is very possibly the most senior-friendly industry in North America, and possibly, the world.

And about 60% of the drivers doing it as singles. The remaining 40% is comprised of couples, who can be spouses, family members, or just friends who team up to do it. This new version of the book will be its last appearance using the title that it was given in 1979, and has borne ever since. That was the year that the author wrote its first edition, and $30,000 was his annual income at that time. Today, singles doing this job full-time, who are armed with the knowledge provided by the handbook (which saves them at least 3-5 years of learning by trial-and-error), typically earn $45-60k/yr., and couples $60-80k. The title of the books next edition will be more reflective of that reality.

About half of the workforce does this job part-time in some manner. Interestingly, one in ten drivers has a regular, Monday-Friday-type day job during the week of a completely different nature, and then spends weekends delivering vehicles. For every weekend he/she chooses to do that, it's possible to earn supplemental income of between $150 and $350.

Typically, companies provide a cash advance before departure that covers the fuel outbound, and the flight home. Those who prefer to return by land may do so. Upon getting home, they turn the remainder of that money back in, along with the receipts, and then are paid according to the number of miles they've driven.

This is a job and lifestyle for people having adventure in their souls. People possessing a generous dose of wanderlust, who find travel and exploring new places a constant and unflagging source of fascination. And getting paid to do so is the best of all possible worlds! It's a very real job, but for them, it seems far more like a hobby! For those who love to fly, it opens up the entire world. By airline rules, the person who gets on the plane keeps the frequent-flyer miles, no matter who pays for the ticket. Using miles earned in this manner, the author has travelled to Europe, Asia and Africa 12 times!

The first half of this book is the handbook & guide portion, and its last half is the Job Market section, which provides full details about all 3,800 North American manufacturers, modifier

About the Author:
Craig Chilton majored in geography, geology, and sociology, both in college and as a university graduate student. In the latter, he served as executive editor of the university's newspaper. And did his studies in Iowa, New York, Arizona, and Mexico City, as well as at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He taught school for 10 years, and was a technical writer for the R&D Division of a major corporation. In that latter capacity, he wrote his first six books.

Combine all of the above with his fervent love of travel, and all the ingredients had come together that were necessary for the publication of this book! Craig took the job of delivering RVs during the summer of 1977, expecting to return to teaching in the fall. That never happened, by his own choice. And during most of the years since, he's been doing a combination of travelling, writing, and enabling thousands of similarly-minded people to embark on the adventures of their lives.
