The many simple diagrams are very helpful. The book will help coaches and P.E. instructors organize practice sessions for both the technical and tactical aspects of the game in interesting and diverse ways. What is especially valuable is that the methods explained in this book have been proven in practice. In addition, this volume also presents valuable ideas and examples about setting up effective practice sessions and how they should be carried out during the competitive season.

From the Author:
This book is based on our successful work with a representative cross section of soccer teams in the former German Democratic Republic, including the Olympic team. We have paid special attention to the work of our best coaches in the top league teams, as well as to the experiences that we have gained in practical training at the German Institute of Physical Education (Deutsche Hochschule fr Krper Kultur). The book was written mainly for enhancing the versatility of training practice, but also deals with certain very specific and fundamental factors in training practice, such as the setup of training sessions and how they should be carried out in the competitive season. To vary training, a large number of drills and exercises are presented that are suitable for the top class level as well as for young ambitious soccer players.

Our observations are based on game concepts that were predominant at the time this book was published. The game has, of course, changed. Certain aspects of modern soccer are not addressed. In its fundamentals, however, the book remains essentially correct and relevant. It will provide coaches, trainers, and players with valuable advice for practical soccer training.

From the Inside Flap:
It seems almost unnecessary to wish this book success. The success it has already achieved has been further extended by subsequent editions of the German original following so quickly. This book will help many coaches and trainers in their daily work. What is especially valuable is that the methods explained here have been proven in practice and will further influence practice. It will bring excitement into the players' creative work and in this way help lead our soccer players to maturity more quickly.

Coaches and instructors are given useful training tips and are provided with an extensive pool of drills and exercises that will strengthen individual training as a major factor in the training process. The many simple diagrams are very helpful and effective.

The publication of this first English edition is welcomed because of its usefulness in the development of our athletes. We wish success to all the coaches and instructors in the further development of young soccer players capable of increasing the standing of soccer through excellent performance.
