Between 1888 and 1890, Stevenson and family made three South Sea voyages, taking close to 200 photographs that Stevenson planned to publish as an illustrated history of the area. That work never materialized, but now readers are able to see some 90 of the photographs (another 90 were lost at sea), accompanied by previously published literary excerpts, chiefly letters of Stevenson, his mother, and his wife. The photos include shots of Stevenson and his party as well as portraits of islanders, among them the renowned Father Damien, who ministered to the leper settlement at Molokai.
