From Library Journal:
Heard the one about Down East magazine notifying Abner Mason of Damariscotta, Maine, that his subscription had expired? The notice came back with a message: "So's Abner." Droll, crusty, imbued with its own logic, this is New England humor. This anthology presents nearly 40 pieces covering three centuries of Yankee wit. Authors include the obvious (John P. Marquand, Cleveland Amory), those not popularly identified with New England (Mark Twain, Russell Baker), and those whose works are not usually considered real hoots (notably Edgar Allan Poe), so there is something for everyone. However, because of its narrow focus, the work as a whole is not for all readers. Not essential for libraries outside New England.
