The Nantahala River is born on Standing Indian Mountain just upstream from this outstanding, high-country campground, where cool breezes from the ridgetops temper the warm summer air. With sites on five loops, the campground is spread out and offers the camper varying site conditions. The first loop diffuses along the Nantahala with hemlock-shaded sites isolated by thick stands of rhododendron. Across the river, three loops are spread out in a large, flat area interspersed with large hardwoods that allow plenty of sun and grass to flourish among their ranks. Ritter Lumber Company once had a logging camp here. Farther back still, across Kimsey Creed, are mountainside sites. They stand level, among the sloping forest of yellow birch, beech, and sugar maple, separated by lush greenery that makes each site seem isolated. Six double sites accommodate larger groups.
