The five members of the No Ordinary Women bookclub have a collective age of just over 250. They have experienced some serious things in life--career changes, health problems, marriage difficulties. Throw in a hot flash or two, a few senior moments, and the kind of moxie you acquire only by living life courageously. In other words, they're people you know--your mother, your next-door neighbor, your sister, your best friend. .. 
 
In the process of writing Murder at Spirit Falls, I discovered, as many before me have, that characters take on a life of their own. These women have become insistent voices in my head, nagging me to keep telling their story. All five book club women--Robin, Cate, Foxy, Louise, and Grace--play a role in this and subsequent books, but in Murder at Spirit Falls, we get to know Robin's history, and how she became the strong woman she is.
 
I'm delighted when readers tell me how the characters have grown on them. Some identify with Robin's struggles with breast cancer. Others feel a kinship to Cate's advocacy for animals. They like the camaraderie and the humor of all the women. And of course there is the obvious allure of book clubs, the place so many of us have formed friendships with smart and caring people who have not forgotten the healing power of laughter.  
 
Murder at Spirit Falls is the first of the No Ordinary Women mystery series. 

About the Author:

Barbara Deese grew up in a family of six voracious readers.  Although planning to go into the foreign service, her life took a different turn when she took a job as one of the first air marshals in the 70's. Except for a year in Germany and a year in Detroit, she has lived in Minnesota.  Murder at Spirit Falls is the first of a series of mysteries featuring the No Ordinary Women book club.
