If you suffer from widespread muscle pain, stiffness, and fatigue, you are not alone. You may be one of the 10 million Americans who has fibromyalgia. Whether you have constant or intermittent pain, When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away is the groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind guide that tells you everything you need to know about fibromyalgia: how FM is diagnosed, basic symptoms and conditions, treatment options, and simple pain-relieving exercises. It also offers useful techniques for coping when FM affects your personal life and work performance, answers to the most commonly asked questions about FM, and much, much more.
When it first appeared in 1992, When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away helped thousands of people make sense of the frustrating and little-understood syndrome called fibromyalgia. It gave people with chronic muscle pain a reliable source of sensitive, sound information that they couldn't find anywhere else. Now, no longer seen as simply a musculoskeletal disorder, FM has been shown to impact the gastrointestinal, neurological, cardio/pulmonary, and automatic nervous systems as well. Completely revised and updated to include these recent medical findings, the third edition of When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away includes:
FM in children
The newest medications and therapies
Alternative medicine in treating FM
New information on raising FM awareness
An FM online information source list
In straightforward language, Gayle Backstrom, who has FM, and Dr. Bernard R. Rubin explain the latest findings in fibromyalgia research and demystify this chronic muscle pain syndrome.
If you think you have FM or know someone who does, there is no better resource to turn to!
Originally diagnosed in 1969 as having rheumatoid arthritis, she has followed the same frustrating path as many others with muscle pain in being misdiagnosed and mistreated. It was not until 1984 that she was given the correct diagnosis of fibromyalgia. She brings both her skills as a writer and experiences of living with the syndrome to the newest edition of her best-selling title When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away.
She received a bachelor of science in communications and a master's in English from Governors State University. She also currently volunteers with the Denton Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association and the Denton Police Department.
Bernard R. Rubin, D.O., F.A.C.P. has completed a number of research studies in fibromyalgia as well as other rheumatic conditions. In addition to providing his expertise to all three editions of When Muscle Pain Won't Go Away, he wrote the chapter on rheumatology in Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine (Williams & Wilkins, 1996). He also served as co-editor for Applications of Medicine in Music (University of North Texas, 1996).
Dr. Rubin is a professor of medicine at the university of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, Texas. He currently serves on the Medical Advisory Board for Arthritis Today and has served on the editorial board for Primary Care Rheumatology.
