To his credit, Bangs was the first to run some of the world's roughest, least accessible rivers. To guide expeditions through wilderness areas, he also founded an adventure travel company that reached across the globe. After a career built around familiarity with rafting, negotiating rapids, and sailing high seas, Bangs decided somewhat tentatively to take on mountain trekking. Although Bangs' book recounts exploration of high-altitude mountain locales from Switzerland to Patagonia, it is perhaps even more about encounters with the select coterie of individuals whose lives are devoted to guiding others.
