Gr 3-5--A photo essay about the Sierra Madre mountain region in Mexico. The full-color photographs and page layout are well done, creating an inviting package that shows various aspects of life in this area. The text is average at best, and somewhat inconsistent at worst. A statement about a specific child is followed by a statement about what many farmers do, then back to a statement about what another group may eat. While the author mentions many children by name, readers don't get a sense of what their lives are like. History, geography, and culture are all discussed, but without chapters organized by topics, it will be difficult to use this book for reports. Three groups of people living in the Sierra Madre are mentioned as separate cultures several times, but their relationship with one another is not clear. On the positive side, there is quite a bit of information on the Tarahumara people. This book shows the way they live today and how tourism, brought by the Chihuahua al Pacifico Railroad, has affected their culture.
