About the Author:

Susan Hedrick has her roots in Kansas City, Kansas. It was there that she played with Barbie dolls, cars and horses, while listening to her older sister's records. Her baccalaureate degree is in Fine Arts and her Master's in Art History, both earned at the University of Kansas. Following jobs at the university art museum and in Russell, Kansas, she served as Curator of Decorative Arts at the Illinois State Museum and Curator of Art at the Alaska State Museum. She has authored articles and books dealing primarily with the decorative arts, including dolls.

She was first exposed to dolls as an art form some two decades ago and has contributed to that concept through her writings and at her present position as Curator of Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art in Bellevue, Washington, where she currently resides.

Susan is currently involved in doing further research with dolls in regional costume. She believes that this area is one of the "vast unknowns," with endless possibilities for the future.

Vilma Matchette was involved with folk costume, dance and research as a young girl. The knowledge gained from this research, combined with an extensive personal library, has only increased with the years. Her interests have grown to include wide spread aspects of folk and historic dress.

She has worked for several museums in research and installation. Other work has been for fine arts auction houses, a fashion school, and many folk performing ensembles. For many years she has been the costume judge for an annual Greek American contest in the Western States. She documented the Blanche Payne Collection of Eastern European Costumes and Textiles for the Henry Art Gallery at the University of Washington. She currently lives in Washington State and continues her explorations into costumes and cultures.
