The Shin'enkan Collection is considered the most outstanding repository of Edo Period (1615-1868) in the Western world. It consists of more than three hundred scroll paintings and screens. The Edo period was the most innovative for Japanese painting more than a dozed schools continuing the revered traditions and exploring new directions. The best of both of these are richly represented in this collection, assembled over thirty years by Mr. and Mrs. Joe D. Price. These paintings are housed in a Pavilion for Japanese Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This structure is specially designed to allow the works to be displayed without a covering of glass and illuminated by soft light like the light that passes through the paper walls of old Japan. This book is the catalog for the original exhibition at the museum.
